spatial sound installation

A collaborative project with Hans Kulk a.k.a Telesoniek Atelier.

Elements is a spatial sound installation accompanied by a stereo (digital) release of pieces composed through electronic treatment and processing of field recordings made in various natural environments, with the aim to artistically explore the intersection of human and natural intelligence, and the thresholds of aesthetic and functional sonic communication.

Supported by De Bossche Makersregeling fund.

field recording and electromagnetic emissions – based piece

We aim to explore the ephemeral, that which lies beyond our regular range of hearing and perception. By listening, we ask where, when and how do we exist in the sound field? The coils act as receivers and amplifiers for the EM field around us, including sound emissions of the broadcasting equipment; but also as speakers – transmitters of the past. Combining and processing field recordings from the past and various places we decontextualise them, and reflect on ever-present change, memory and the position in the sound field. Throughout the piece we facilitate an interaction between the existing soundscapes – those within and those beyond human perception, bringing them into contact with each other – a process sometimes resulting in attunement.

Presented at Radiophrenia festival, Glasgow, April 2025.

spatial composition

Made for the Wavefield Synthesis spatial sound system at the Institute of Sonology, Den Haag. Accessed through the WFS Collider software, the system uses algorithms to spatialize sounds in relation to arrays of 192 speakers organised in a rectangular shape.

The piece is a continuation of my conceptual research of sonic liminal spaces, investigating psychoacoustic phenomena. Limina is a series of interferences into our perception of sound environments by ways of shifting the listening experience and applying different processing techniques to a single field recording at a time.

voltage control / modular

A composition for the Serge, and a live performance (Dec. 2022, Willem Twee Toonzaal)

As part of my expanded research into voltage control techniques at the Willem Twee studios, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, I composed this 8-channel piece from the live recordings made on the Serge system during August through December 2021. Serge is one of the first synthesizers, developed in 1972 by Serge Tcherepnin, Rich Gold and Randy Cohen at CalArts.
